One of the best and simplest ways to get an idea of your social media ROI is by tracking the number of people who click the links you post to your social networks. Tools like Brev.is make it easy to track your social media links and determine
precisely how many people have clicked
through to your main content.

This number of click-throughs not only tells you how many people thought your link was worth clicking, but it also helps you discover the best time(s) of day to publish posts, what sort of teasers are best for your links, and what sort of content really interests your fans and followers. Heck, with Gremln’s Target Pages tool, you can even track link clicks from your tweet all the way to the actual sale. ROI measurement doesn’t get much better than that.

But the number of clicks can only take you so far. At some point, you’re going to need to sit down and answer the question, “How many clicks is enough?” How many times does your adoring public need to click on a link before you can call your tweet a success?

Social media is growing up. What began as an amusing method of occasional interaction is now a mass media and marketing communications force to be reckoned with. Today’s social networks boast users from all demographics, and the net is ever widening.

Social media play huge roles in today’s marketing plan, spurred on not only by the widespread appeal of networks like Facebook and Twitter, but also by the relative inexpensiveness of using them as marketing tools. The number of employment positions dedicated solely to social media marketing and content production is surging. A company’s Twitter feed used to be an intern project. Now, in many cases, social media marketing is a team effort.

While this is an exciting shift in the marketing dynamic, it also presents its own unique set of challenges. When you’ve got a few cooks in the social media kitchen, it’s easy to step on each other’s toes, and team management becomes incredibly important. As the leader of a social media team, it becomes all too easy for other members to post content that you feel is inappropriate, inaccurate, or in some other way not in lock-step with your brand. There can be some confusion as to who should respond (or who has already responded) to which Twitter question or Facebook issue, and we’ve all heard the horror stories of company employees accidentally posting their personal tweets to their business accounts. Background Check – Making the most of your company’s Twitter background

When’s the last time you checked out another business’s Twitter page? I don’t mean when’s the last time you saw one of their tweets. I mean, when’s the last time you clicked through to view that company’s full Twitter profile and saw its Twitter background design? I’m betting it’s been a while. For most of us, any Twitter profile other than our own is out of sight and definitely out of mind.

But sooner or later, we all find ourselves exploring someone else’s Twitter profile. It usually happens when we’re searching around for new tweeters to follow. Sometimes it happens because we want to scroll back through all the person’s recent tweets. Every once in a while it happens because we’re just bored out of our gourds and have nothing better to do than surf through random Twitter usernames. Embracing the Next Social Network (or “How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Google+”)

I don’t know if you’ve heard, but there's this new social network called Google+.

I know, I know, that’s a bit of an understatement. Currently, the social network has more than 20 million users. That’s twice as many users as Foursquare has, and Foursquare has been around for two years. Google+ blew past them in two weeks.

Google+ may still be quite a way off from Facebook’s impressive 800 million-ish users, but here’s something else to keep in mind: Google+ is still invite-only. It’s obliterating records as the fastest growing online social network in history, and it isn’t even open to the public yet.

Generally speaking, the instant success of Google’s latest project has elicited one of two responses from my own social circles; either “Yes, finally, an alternative to Facebook!” or, more often than not, the much less enthusiastic, “Ugh. Another social network?”

If you’re reading this, it probably means you’re taking a break from playing the multi-platform breakout hit game Angry Birds. (I’ll try to keep this short so you can get back to beating Mine and Dine.)

Angry Birds, which was created by Rovio Mobile, was initially released for the iPhone in December 2009. Now, a year and a half later, Angry Birds is everywhere; iPads, iPods, android devices, PC browsers, Google Chrome, and even the PlayStation Portable. Wherever you are, there, too, are the birds. The game has been downloaded more than 250 million times.

There are several lessons social media marketers can learn from Angry Birds’ seemingly boundless success. Here are the five biggest:

1. Your campaign doesn’t have to be complex to be successful

Angry Birds is a simple concept. Launch the bird, hit the pigs. It’s an easy game to play, which means it’s an easy game to learn. Virtually anyone can pick it up and start playing in a matter of seconds, which makes it broadly appealing. When designing a far-reaching marketing strategy, keep in mind that simpler is often better.

Get Crowded - Using social media to crowdsource your marketing

It was bound to happen. I mean, all the conditions were right. The economy fell like a sack of flour, forcing everyone to start doing a lot more with a lot less. We were suddenly faced with a large and talented unemployment pool. Meanwhile, social media took off like a rocket. Given these conditions, it’s no wonder crowdsourcing really exploded.

Crowdsourcing is a relatively new take on an old idea. The word “crowdsource” is a combination of the words “crowd” and “outsource.” Outsourcing has been around forever—the IT and sales industries are infamous for putting inexpensive call centers halfway around the world. Crowdsourcing is the same concept, except instead of hiring a specialized company to do the work in question, companies open up the job to the public at large. Anyone looking for a little extra work can take a shot at the project.

Leverage the power of the public

A good example of this is LG’s 2010 “Design the Future” competition. Using the popular crowdsourcing platform crowdSPRING, LG offered cash prizes (up to $20,000) to the person who submitted the best design for what the phone of the future might look like.

But wait. Doesn’t a company like LG have a Research and Development department for things like that? Sure, probably. But crowdsourcing is cheaper, and it allowed the company to tap into entirely new resources by way of Joe Public.
